Jason

I sigh as I plop back down on the couch in the living room after Riley and her boyfriend leave. Reed hands me another beer and sits down across from me. Wren comes and slides into his lap.

He gives me a disappointed look. “What the fuck did you do?”

I give an offended laugh back. “Nothing.”

He rolls his eyes. “You go chasing after the girl, and then she comes back down with some excuse about being sick and needing to leave.”

I try to hold back my smile, but I can’t. I wouldn’t be able to lie to him anyway. He knows me too well. “I may have tried to kiss her.”

Wren laughs first. “Oh God! Now we know why she ran for the hills.”

“Shut up!” I laugh. “She definitely kissed me back.”

I pause and smile down at the ground while I think back to what it felt like to have my lips against hers. She didn’t want to push me away. She hesitated. Now I just have to convince her that I fucked up.

I glance back up at Wren and Reed’s waiting faces. “Before she shoved me back and slapped me across the face.”

Wren busts out laughing. “Good for her!” she manages to get out through her giggles.

“Wow, okay. Aren’t you supposed to take my side here? Some friends you are,” I say sarcastically.

She continues to laugh. “No way! You told her to date Blaine. That’s all on you. I can barely keep up with your mood swings. I can’t imagine what she’s going through.”

I lean forward with my elbows on my knees. “I didn’t tell her to date Blaine! She was already dating him! She still is. What am I supposed to do? Break them up?”

Reed laughs this time. “What exactly did you think kissing her would do if not break them up?”

I fall back against the couch again. “I don’t know. I wasn’t exactly thinking.”

Wren raises her eyebrows and smirks at me. “The way I see it, you like her. She likes you. What’s the issue?” she asks sarcastically as she repeats the same exact words I told her back when she and Reed were both denying their feelings when they are obviously perfect for each other.

I mock-laugh back. “Very funny.” Then I sigh. “This is totally different. I don’t even know if she does, you know, like me.”

Wren and Reed both give me mocking aw’s at the same time. I narrow my eyes at them. “Shut the fuck up! I hate you both!”

Wren laughs. “You want me to send her a note? Do you like Jason? Circle yes or no.”

I bolt up from the couch. “Okay! I’m out of here!”

They both laugh, but Wren comes up and gives me a hug before walking back to her room. Reed follows me over to the front door, but he gives me a serious look before saying goodbye.

“I know you haven’t known her long, but if you are serious about her, then don’t wait. I’d hate to see you waste seven years like I did.
